Do not pull the emergency release and try to lift the door by hand. With a broken spring, nothing is holding the weight of the door, and a sectional door is far heavier than one person can safely hold.

What should I check before I write?
If nothing looks broken, a quick balance test often answers the question faster than we can. With the door closed, pull the opener release cord. Lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go. A balanced door stays about where you put it.
Stop if the door is suddenly very heavy or will not move. That is a broken spring. Do not force it or lift it by hand.
If the door slams down or flies up, the springs are out of balance. That is the most common thing a service call finds, and why a new opener is so often the wrong purchase.
