How we vet garage door professionals
HyreGarage will check records where they exist: state licensing where the trade is licensed, business registration, insurance certificates, service area and service types.
Matching is still being built, so this is the standard we are building to. A check means one record on one date.
It is not an endorsement or a guarantee, and we publish no ratings or rankings.
Verification is not endorsement. If we say a license was active on a date, that is a fact about a record on that date. It does not predict the quality of the work, the crew who arrive, or what happens when the door needs adjusting later.
Why is garage door work hard to verify?
There is no national list of garage door companies, and no single license behind one. Some states license the trade and publish a searchable board. Some fold it into a general contractor license, which confirms the company can do building work but says little about garage doors.
Some states do not license this work at all. There, a missing license number is normal, not a red flag. Our study of garage door installer licensing by state shows what we could confirm.
What will HyreGarage check, where records exist?
- License status. With the state or city board, where the trade is licensed and the list is public.
- Business registration. With the state, to confirm the company exists and is in good standing.
- Insurance. Where a certificate is provided. One from the insurer counts for more than one from the company.
- Service area. So an introduction goes to a company that actually works where you live.
- Service types. A company doing garage organization and flooring may not be equipped for torsion spring work.
- Public discipline records. Where the licensing board publishes them.
What can those checks not tell you?
- Whether the work will be good. No record predicts workmanship.
- Who will arrive. Licenses belong to companies. Crews change.
- Whether the quote is complete. A licensed company can still write "new springs" with no cycle rating.
- Whether the price is fair. No record tells us what your door should cost. See what garage door work costs.
- Whether they will come back. Willingness to return and adjust a door is not in any register.
- Whether insurance is current today. A certificate is a snapshot. Cover can lapse the week after.
What will HyreGarage never do?
- Publish a ranking of garage door companies, which we would have to invent or buy.
- Publish reviews or testimonials we cannot stand behind.
- Call a company "certified" or "approved" by us. Those words claim a judgment we cannot make.
- Suggest that an introduction through this site means the work is guaranteed.
- Say a license is current when what we hold is a record from a past date.
Where we are today. Matching with garage door companies is still being built. The checks on this page are the standard we are building to. They do not describe a network of checked companies that already exists.
What should I check myself?
- Current licensing. With the issuing board, where your state requires it.
- Insurance certificates. Ask the insurer directly when a lot of money is at stake.
- A written, itemized quote. With labor listed apart from parts.
- Parts by specification. Above all, the spring cycle rating. The spring life calculator shows what it means in years.
- Both warranties. The maker's warranty and the labor warranty, listed separately.
- A safety test at handover. The balance test and safety reverse, shown in front of you.
