The finding
No single garage door company works in more than one of the ten states we cover. We checked all 3,901 companies in HyreGarage’s own store, cross-checked against state license boards (retrieved 2026-09-06).
The biggest names are franchise brands. Overhead Door Company has 60 separately owned locations across all ten states. The oldest active license is Overhead Door Co of Santa Rosa’s: 53.7 years.
What did we find?
We have 3,901 companies in 2,709 cities across ten states. Not one company is verified as working in more than one state.
Three brands show up again and again: Overhead Door Company (60 locations, all ten states), Precision Door Service (29 locations, eight states) and ProLift Garage Doors (18 locations, six states).
Overhead Door Co of Santa Rosa Inc holds the oldest active, individually verified license in our store. It is itself an Overhead Door Company franchisee.
Nevada’s board does not publish license issue dates, so we use its own size tier instead. Six companies hold the top “Unlimited” tier, and two more sit at the $5,000,000 tier below it.
What does this ranking measure, and what doesn’t it?
Read how we count franchises before the tables below. It changes the ranking more than anything else.
Our store holds no verified figures for any of those. Everything here comes from public license records and our own analysis of brand names and locations.
Overhead Door Company, Precision Door Service and ProLift Garage Doors each appear as dozens of separate, independently owned companies. Each has its own state license. We rank the brand’s reach and each location’s own standing separately, and we never merge them without saying so.
Nevada’s license listing shows an expiration date but not an issue date. The board’s own record says so. For Nevada we use its “monetary limit” tier instead of license age.
We hold primary-verified license records for California, Nevada and Arizona only (457 records). The age and franchise findings rest on those states plus our name match across the full store, not on all ten states.
This page ranks on facts we can check: license age, franchise reach and monetary limit. It does not rank workmanship, price or customer satisfaction. Our store measures none of those.
Which garage door franchise reaches the most states?
Overhead Door Company, by a wide margin. Every location below is a separately owned, separately licensed business under a shared brand, not a branch office.

How we counted: we matched each company’s brand name to the franchise’s naming pattern (for example “Overhead Door Company of <city>”), then removed duplicates by company record. A location using a very different name would be missed. So treat these counts as a minimum, not a full count.
Which garage door companies have the oldest active licenses?
These ten, all in California and Arizona. Nevada’s board does not publish issue dates. Ranked by years since the license was first issued, and still active when we checked.

Four of the ten oldest are Overhead Door Company franchisees, even though that brand is a small share of all dated, active records.

Nevada’s license listing has no issue dates, so we report its own size tier instead.

The Nevada State Contractors Board sets a “monetary limit”: the largest single contract a licensee may take on. It is based on financial responsibility, not age. “Unlimited” is the top tier; $5,000,000 is the tier below. Neither is a revenue or size claim. It is a licensing ceiling.
Why do almost no garage door companies work across state lines?
Because the work is local. Zero multi-state companies in 3,901 is not a counting glitch. It matches how this trade works.
A technician has to come to your house. That usually means a local yard or warehouse with parts, within about an hour’s drive. To serve customers in another state, a company needs a second local operation there. In practice that is a separate business, with its own license, staff and stock.
That is why franchising, not direct expansion, is how garage door brands grow. The brand supplies a name, marketing and often standard processes. Each location stays a separately owned, separately licensed local business. Our data shows exactly that for Overhead Door Company, Precision Door Service and ProLift Garage Doors.
HyreGarage analysis: “Who is the largest garage door company?” has three different answers. Largest single legal entity: our data suggests there may be no multi-state answer at all. Largest franchise by locations: Overhead Door Company, by a wide margin. Longest-running single business: Overhead Door Co of Santa Rosa Inc, at 53.7 years.
A list that answers the question without saying which one it means is not being precise. To check a specific company, start with which states license garage door installers at all and what insurance each state requires.
What do the terms on this page mean?
- Franchise network
- A shared brand name used by many independently owned businesses. Each holds its own state license. Overhead Door Company, Precision Door Service and ProLift Garage Doors are the three we found.
- Company record
- HyreGarage’s unique ID for one verified business in our store. Each franchise location has its own ID, because each is a separate legal entity.
- Issue date (license)
- The date a state first granted a contractor license. California and Arizona publish it. Nevada does not, as its board’s own listing states.
- Monetary limit
- Nevada’s cap on the largest single contract a licensee may take on. We use it as Nevada’s size measure in place of license age.
- Primary-verified
- A license record we confirmed directly against the state board’s own public record, rather than a third-party listing such as a BBB category.
How did we build and count the store?
The counting decisions behind every number on this page.
One record per legal business
We give each separate business we can verify its own record ID. Most come from Better Business Bureau listings, cross-checked against state license boards where a matching record exists. A franchisee and its franchisor are never merged unless they are the same legal entity.
Multi-state check: a direct count
We matched every company record to each state where it has a record, kept only the states where it is marked as operating, and counted the states per company. The result, zero companies in more than one state, is a direct count, not an estimate.
Franchises: found by name pattern
We searched all 3,901 brand names for known franchise naming patterns: “Overhead Door Co(mpany) of <city>”, “Precision (Garage) Door Service” and “ProLift Garage Door(s) of <city>”. We checked a sample of matches by hand against each company’s city and state before counting.
License age: read from the record
For California and Arizona, we read the issue date on each primary-verified license, worked out the years to the retrieval date, and kept only licenses still active. Nevada was left out of this step because its board publishes no issue date at all.
How should you use this page when comparing companies?
What each ranking tells you, and what it does not.
If it trades under one of the three brands above, its license, insurance and ownership are its own. The brand’s size or reputation says nothing certain about this one location.
Fifty-three years of continuous licensing means a business has lasted. It does not measure the work it will do on your door.
A new franchisee under an old brand does not inherit the brand’s license history. Ask for that location’s own license number and check it with the state board. Our guide to choosing a garage door company lists what else to check.
Franchise reach, license age, or Nevada’s monetary-limit tier. Pick the one that matters for your decision. This page does not blend them into one number.
What couldn’t we verify?
Revenue, staff or fleet size for any company. None of these are in our store, and we did not estimate them. A ranking of “largest” by these measures is using a different, unverified source.
A complete franchise count. We matched names against the patterns of three brands we identified. A franchisee using a very different name, or a fourth brand we did not search for, would not appear here.
Nevada license age. The Nevada State Contractors Board’s public listing shows an expiration date but not the first issue date, and says so. We report Nevada’s monetary-limit tier rather than guess an age we cannot check.
License records for the other seven states. Our verified license records cover California, Nevada and Arizona. The franchise name match covers all 3,901 companies in ten states. The license-age ranking covers California and Arizona only.

How this desk works
- Primary sources only. Injury counts come from CPSC. Housing counts come from the Census file, not from a summary of it. Code history comes from the building commission that adopted the code. We do not cite an article that cites a source; we retrieve the source and do the arithmetic ourselves.
- Every figure carries its retrieval date. Registers change, datasets are revised and codes are amended. A number without the date it was read cannot be checked, so every study states one.
- Fact, calculation and analysis are labeled apart. A quote is a quote, a HyreGarage computation says so, and an interpretation says “HyreGarage analysis”. Presenting our reading of a dataset as something the agency stated would be the easiest way to lose the only thing this desk is for.
- Limitations go above the fold. If a figure is an upper bound, a bracket, or an association rather than a cause, that is said before the figure is quoted rather than in a footnote underneath it.
- No DIY instructions for spring, cable or track work. Those components hold enough stored energy to cause serious injury, and CPSC records the consequences. We describe what has failed and what a competent repair involves; we do not tell you how to do it.
